The maths, explained

How a star rating average is calculated.

Multiply each star value by the number of votes it received, add every total together, then divide by the total number of votes. So for 20 five-star votes, 10 four-star votes and 2 three-star votes: (5×20 + 4×10 + 3×2) ÷ 32 = 4.56.

5-star scale

The standard used by Google, Trustpilot, app stores and most review platforms. Ratings run from 1 to 5.

10-star scale

Used by some review sites and survey tools for finer granularity — 1 to 10 instead of 1 to 5. Toggle above to switch.

Weighted, not counted

A rating isn't "3 stars out of 5 reviews" — it's a weighted average across every vote, which is why one bad review among hundreds barely moves the needle.

How is a star rating average calculated? +
